Due to lack of proper infrastructure to handle fruits and vegetables in our country, there is a considerable wastage up to the tune of 25-30% in value. Cleaning, grading, packing, standardization, quality certification and process handling through an effective cold chain management system could improve the quality of agricultural commodities.
Since only a few products are currently transported through cold chain, there is considerable scope of expansion of this activity. The "Capital Subsidy Scheme" of Government of India indicates the thrust given to this area. Nabcons is creating awareness and preparing model projects for various activities, which can be taken up under this scheme.
Nabcons has completed 25 assignments in post-harvest technology which cover various activities like:
- Appraisal of projects for Bank financing of items like food processing, rural godowns, establishment of Food Park etc.
- Techno-economic feasibility studies of cold storages, warehousing facilities
- Setting up of ultra modern cold storage plants with precooling and packing house units
